Is It Cheaper to Buy Car Insurance Online or Through an Agent?

If you’re shopping for car insurance, you may wonder whether it is cheaper to buy car insurance online or go through an insurance agent.
The short answer: neither option is automatically cheaper. Your premium is primarily determined by the insurance company’s rates and your individual rating factors – things like your driving history, vehicle, location, coverage limits, deductibles, insurance history, and available discounts.
Using an insurance agent does not necessarily mean you are paying more for your policy. In many situations, an independent insurance agent can also compare several insurance companies for you, which may make it easier to find a competitive combination of price and coverage.
For drivers in South Carolina and North Carolina, the bigger question is often not simply “online or agent?” but rather which insurance company and coverage combination is the best fit for you.
Do Insurance Agents Charge a Fee for Car Insurance?
In most standard personal auto insurance situations, consumers do not pay their insurance agent a separate fee simply for obtaining a quote or purchasing a policy.
Insurance agencies are typically compensated by the insurance company through a commission when a policy is written.
That does not necessarily mean every insurance company will charge exactly the same premium through every distribution channel. Different carriers may sell insurance directly, through captive agents, through independent agents, or through a combination of those methods.
The important point is that working with an agent does not automatically mean an additional agent fee is being added on top of your car insurance premium.
How much do insurance agents charge?
For most personal auto insurance policies, the customer does not receive a separate bill from the insurance agent for helping with the policy. Instead, the insurance company generally pays the agency a commission based on the premium.
There can be exceptions depending on the type of insurance, state, agency, or service involved, so it is always reasonable to ask an agency whether any separate fees apply.
Is It Cheaper to Buy Car Insurance Online or Through an Agent?
Sometimes buying online produces the lowest quote. Sometimes an insurance agent finds the better option.
There is no universal rule that says online car insurance is cheaper.
The premium can vary significantly from one insurance company to another because each insurer evaluates risk differently. One company may be especially competitive for a driver with a clean driving record, while another may price younger drivers, multiple vehicles, prior claims, or other situations differently.
This is one area where an independent insurance agent can be useful. Instead of getting a quote from only one insurance company, an independent agent may have access to several companies and can compare options on your behalf.
You can certainly do the same thing yourself online, but that may require obtaining separate quotes from multiple insurers and making sure you are comparing equivalent coverage.
What Are the Advantages of Buying Car Insurance Online?
Buying insurance online can make a lot of sense for some consumers.
Advantages can include:
- Getting quotes at any time of day
- Moving through the process quickly
- Making your own coverage selections
- Comparing several direct-to-consumer companies
- Purchasing a policy without speaking to an agent
If your insurance needs are relatively simple and you are comfortable understanding the coverage choices, buying online can be convenient.
Online insurance is not inherently worse than insurance purchased through an agent. Many reputable insurance companies offer excellent products and service through direct online channels.
The tradeoff is that you are usually responsible for making more of the coverage decisions yourself.
What Are the Advantages of Buying Through an Insurance Agent?
An insurance agent can help you understand what you are buying rather than simply selecting limits from a screen.
A good agent can help you:
- Understand liability limits
- Compare deductibles
- Review uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage
- Identify available discounts
- Decide whether comprehensive and collision coverage make sense
- Coordinate your auto policy with homeowners, renters, umbrella, or other insurance
- Compare different insurance companies when working with an independent agency
That last point is important.
There is a difference between an independent insurance agent and an agent who represents only one insurance company.
Independent Insurance Agent vs. Captive Agent
Captive insurance agent
A captive agent generally represents one insurance company or insurance group.
That means the agent can help you choose among the products offered by that company, but generally cannot shop your policy with unrelated insurers.
Independent insurance agent
An independent insurance agency represents multiple insurance companies.
That means the agency can potentially compare several carriers and determine which ones appear to fit your situation best.
If your premium changes substantially at renewal, an independent agent may also be able to review other carriers the agency represents without requiring you to start your search completely from scratch.
At Davis Insurance Associates, we represent multiple insurance companies for drivers in South Carolina and North Carolina, which allows us to compare options rather than relying on only one carrier.
Does Using an Insurance Agent Make Car Insurance More Expensive?
Not necessarily.
The fact that an insurance company pays a commission to an agency does not by itself mean that your policy would have been cheaper if you bought it online.
Insurance companies build their overall distribution and operating expenses into their pricing. Some companies sell primarily through agents, some sell directly to consumers, and some use multiple channels.
Rather than assuming one purchasing method is always cheaper, compare the actual premium and coverage being offered.
For example, a $1,500 policy is not necessarily a better deal than a $1,650 policy if the cheaper option has substantially lower liability limits, higher deductibles, or important coverage differences.
Price matters, but it should be compared alongside coverage.
Can an Independent Insurance Agent Save You Money?
Possibly, but no agent can guarantee that they will always find a lower price.
An independent agency may be able to help reduce your premium by:
- Comparing multiple insurance companies
- Identifying discounts
- Bundling home and auto insurance when beneficial
- Matching your situation with a carrier that prices your risk more competitively
- Reviewing deductibles and coverage choices
- Re-shopping coverage when appropriate
Sometimes an agent will find a lower premium.
Other times, the best recommendation may be to stay exactly where you are because your current company is already providing the best overall option.
A good insurance review should not begin with the assumption that you need to switch companies.
The goal should be to determine whether your current combination of price, coverage, and company still makes sense.
Does It Matter Whether Your Agent Is Local?
For straightforward car insurance, an agent does not necessarily need to be located down the street to provide good service.
However, an agent who regularly works with insurance in your state may be more familiar with state-specific coverage requirements, local market conditions, and common questions.
For example, South Carolina drivers may have questions about:
- Required auto insurance
- Uninsured motorist coverage
- Underinsured motorist coverage
- Coastal storm exposure
- Teen drivers
- Golf carts and recreational vehicles
- Bundling auto coverage with coastal homeowners insurance
For those situations, working with an agency that regularly handles South Carolina insurance can be helpful.
Online Car Insurance vs. Insurance Agent: Which Is Better?
Neither option is best for everyone.
Buying online may be a good fit if:
- You know exactly what coverage you want
- Your insurance situation is simple
- You prefer handling everything yourself
- Convenience is your biggest priority
Working with an agent may be a good fit if:
- You want help understanding coverage
- You want someone to compare several insurance companies
- You have multiple vehicles or drivers
- You want to bundle home and auto insurance
- You have young drivers, claims, tickets, or unusual vehicles
- You want someone you can contact when questions arise
The right choice depends on how much assistance and comparison shopping you want.
What About Companies That Sell Car Insurance Directly?
Some direct-to-consumer insurance companies can be very competitive, and buying directly may work well for consumers who are comfortable managing their own coverage.
One difference is the level of assistance available when questions come up. If your premium increases, you receive a non-renewal, or you need help understanding a coverage issue, an insurance agent can help explain your options and, in the case of an independent agent, may be able to compare other insurance companies.
So, Is It Cheaper to Buy Car Insurance Online or Through an Agent?
There is no rule that buying car insurance online is cheaper than buying it through an agent.
The price depends much more on the insurance company, your individual rating factors, and the coverage you select.
Buying online can be quick and convenient.
Working with an independent insurance agent can give you the advantage of having someone help compare companies, explain coverage, and review your options.
For many consumers, the best approach is simply to compare both the premium and the coverage rather than choosing based only on how the policy is purchased.
