Navigating the Waves: Understanding Boat Insurance Costs in South Carolina
January 24, 2024 by Brad Davis, CIC (edited 1/28/2024)
Introduction:
Owning a boat in South Carolina offers the opportunity to explore the picturesque waterways and enjoy the beauty of the coastline. Whether you have a sleek sailboat or a powerful motorboat, it's essential to consider the financial responsibility that comes with being a boat owner. One crucial aspect is boat insurance, designed to protect your investment and ensure peace of mind while navigating the waters. In this blog post, I'll dive into the factors that influence boat insurance costs in South Carolina.
But first, how much does it cost?
Keep in mind, there are several factors (shown further below) and your premium could (and probably will) vary from this. But in our agency, our average boat or watercraft premium is right about $457 for a year. This really just gives a starting point for a small to average size boat.
Here is a small sample of the boat policies we carry - just to show I didn't pull $457 completely out of the air.
*This sample includes some policies for single personal watercraft (ex: Jet Ski), so you see some pretty small premiums there.
LET'S PUT A RANGE OF $400 - $600 FOR THE AVERAGE ANNUAL COST OF BOAT INSURANCE IN SOUTH CAROLINA, for a typical small boat.
This is really a small price to pay for the protection it provides and piece of mind.
Factors Affecting Boat Insurance Costs:
Boat Type and Value:
Boat insurance costs are often influenced by the type of your watercraft. Generally, more expensive and high-performance boats may require higher coverage, leading to increased insurance premiums.
Coverage Options:
Boat owners can choose from various coverage options based on their needs. Liability coverage, which protects against damage to other boats or property, is mandatory. However, comprehensive coverage, which includes protection against theft, vandalism, and natural disasters, can add to the overall cost.
Navigational Areas:
South Carolina offers a diverse range of waterways, from serene lakes to the Atlantic Ocean. The navigational area where you plan to use your boat can impact insurance costs. Coastal areas might have different risks compared to inland lakes, affecting premium rates.
Boating Experience:
Insurance providers often consider the boat owner's experience and track record. Those with a history of safe boating and no prior claims may qualify for lower premiums. Additionally,, completing boating safety courses can sometimes lead to insurance discounts.
Deductibles:
The deductible is the amount the policyholder must pay before the insurance coverage kicks in. Opting for a higher deductible can lower your premium costs, but it will cost you more if you have a covered claim.
Boat Storage and Security Measures:
Where you store your boat when not in use and the security measures in place can impact insurance costs. A secure marina or storage facility with surveillance may result in a lower premium.
Claims History:
Just like with other types of insurance, a history of claims can lead to higher premiums. Boat owners with a clean claims history are often seen as lower risk, potentially resulting in more affordable insurance. And yes, driving violations that show up on your driving record can also negatively affect your premium.

Conclusion:
Boat insurance costs in South Carolina are influenced by a combination of factors, each playing a role in determining the premium you'll pay. As a responsible boat owner, it's essential to carefully consider your coverage needs and explore options that align with your budget. By understanding the factors that impact boat insurance costs, you can navigate the waters with confidence, knowing that your investment is protected against unforeseen circumstances.
P.S. You should consider purchasing boat or watercraft insurance on any and all boats, especially if there is an engine attached. It's not just about covering damage done to your boat, but maybe more importantly the damage you can cause to another boat, person, or property. In some cases (for small boats) you can add coverage to your Homeowners Policy, but it is not as good as a separate Watercraft Policy.
